Start with the keys. All five pianos in this guide have 88 weighted, touch-sensitive keys, so they respond to how hard you play and build the finger strength a lesson teacher expects. The differences are in the mechanism. Yamaha's graded hammer actions are heavier in the low keys and lighter in the high keys, as an acoustic piano is, and Roland's PHA-4 Standard adds escapement, the slight notch felt when a grand piano key is pressed gently. Key feel matters more to a student than a long list of extra sounds.
Next, think about the stand and the bench. Four of these pianos are slabs that need a stand; their makers sell matching ones separately. The Donner DDP-80 comes with legs and a three-pedal unit but arrives unassembled and without a bench. A piano gift is more complete with a stand, a bench and a pair of headphones for quiet practice after bedtime.
Then decide how much the player will use a phone or tablet. Bluetooth audio (the Yamahas, and the Casio through its included adaptor) lets the piano's speakers play music from a phone. Bluetooth MIDI (the Roland, and the Casio adaptor) connects the piano to learning and recording apps. Those are different jobs, and the listings do not always make that clear.

The Roland FP-10 puts its money into the parts a piano teacher notices. Roland fits it with the PHA-4 Standard keyboard, with escapement and an ivory-feel key surface; Roland names the same keyboard on its pricier FP-60X. It plays up to 96 notes at once, the highest polyphony of the two entry portables here. 2
Its most useful gift feature is Twin Piano mode. It divides the keyboard into two identical halves so a student and teacher, or a parent and child, can play the same notes side by side. Headphones and a quiet key action make evening practice possible without waking the house. 2 6
Know what it leaves out. The FP-10's Bluetooth is MIDI only: it connects to the Roland Piano App and learning apps, but it will not stream songs through the piano's speakers. It has 15 sounds on the panel, with 36 in total through the app, and a single mini-jack headphone output. Best for playing along with favorite songs
Yamaha P-145BT
A beginner who is motivated by music they already love and wants to hear a song from a phone through the piano while playing.
The Yamaha P-145BT is a compact portable from Yamaha's P series, and its "BT" is the reason to pick it over the Roland. Bluetooth audio lets the player stream a song from a phone and play along through the piano's own two 7-watt speakers, which turns practice into something closer to jamming. 1 5
The keys are Yamaha's Graded Hammer Compact action with matte black keytops, heavier in the bass and lighter in the treble. The panel is deliberately simple: 10 voices, a metronome and a Duo mode that splits the keyboard into two equal halves for side-by-side lessons, much like the Roland's Twin Piano. The trade-offs are in the sound engine. Yamaha lists 64-note polyphony, lower than the Roland's 96, and a Yamaha CFIIIS piano sample; its own spec table reserves the flagship CFX sample for the pricier P-225. Casio Privia PX-S1100, Gloss Red
A player with limited space, or anyone who would enjoy a bright red instrument on a table, a desk or a bedroom dresser.
Unwrap the Casio PX-S1100 in Gloss Red on Christmas morning and it already looks like a present. The finish is a glossy cranberry red, the body is very shallow from front to back, and Casio's listing describes illuminated touch controls with gold accents rather than rows of physical buttons. 7
It is also the only pick here described as running on batteries. The listing gives its size as 1,322 × 232 × 102 millimeters without the music stand, says it weighs under 25 pounds and says it runs on batteries, so it can move from a table to a desk to a bed. Casio pairs a German grand piano sound with 17 other tones, and adds a Duet Mode, a built-in MIDI and audio recorder, and the Casio Music Space app. 7
More comes in the box than with the Yamaha or Roland: the WU-BT10 wireless adaptor for Bluetooth audio and MIDI, an SP-3 pedal, a music stand and the AC adaptor. 7
The caveats are price and paperwork. It costs more than the two portables above. And Casio's own website did not load for this guide, so every detail here comes from the Amazon listing; check it before buying if a specific spec, such as polyphony or the headphone connection, matters to the player. 7

A family that wants a piano-shaped piece of furniture in the living room, with three pedals, without shopping for a separate stand.
The Donner DDP-80 is the only pick here that stands on its own. A wood-finish cabinet sits on four slim, angled legs, with a matching music rest and a three-pedal unit, so it reads as mid-century furniture rather than a keyboard on a stand. 3 8

It is also the biggest commitment. Yamaha gives its width as 55 inches, its depth as 17-1/2 inches and its weight as 47 pounds 3 ounces.
